Death of the Rebel

James Dean was killed in an automobile accident today along with his mechanic Rolf Wutherich, when Dean’s Porsche 550 Spyder crashed head-on into another car. The tormented young actor was the embodiment of an entire generation’s restless rebellion, made famous by his role in Rebel Without a Cause and called “the damaged but beautiful soul of our time” by Andy Warhol. He had always seemed to be searching for a way to release that restless energy, finding an outlet in the racing of cars and motorcycles. His fascination with cars and speed began when his father gave him his first ’39 Chevy. Ironically, Dean had been on his way to a car race at the time of his death.

Paul Newman “King Of Cool” 1925-2008

WESTPORT, Conn. — Paul Newman, the Academy-Award winning superstar who personified cool as the anti-hero of such films as “Hud,” “Cool Hand Luke” and “The Color of Money”–and as an activist, race car driver and popcorn impresario–has died. He was 83.

Newman died Friday after a long battle with cancer at his farmhouse near Westport, publicist Jeff Sanderson said. He was surrounded by his family and close friends.

In May, Newman had dropped plans to direct a fall production of “Of Mice and Men,” citing unspecified health issues.

He got his start in theater and on television during the 1950s, and went on to become one of the world’s most enduring and popular film stars, a legend held in awe by his peers. He was nominated for Oscars 10 times, winning one regular award and two honorary ones, and had major roles in more than 50 motion pictures, including “Exodus,” “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” “The Verdict,” “The Sting” and “Absence of Malice.”

During a Google Search I ran across this picture that someone had posted on Flicker.  It appears to have started life being a late model Ford Ranger.

Fireball Run II Transcontiental 2008 Road Rally

Filed under: Car Shows, Cars, General, History — Tags: , — blasterhappy @ 3:59 am

The Fireball Run II Road Rally will be making a stop right here in Ferriday, La at the Delta Music Museum.  Miss-Lou Motor Mafia will be on hand to cover the event with video and digital images.

Welcome “back to the track” the 2008 Fireball Run Transcontinental Rally 2 is America’s Adventurtainment rally™.

(September 25th – October 4th 2008 ) Fireball Run 2: Back to the Track! 100 teams comprised of some of the most successful people on the planet embark on a 3500 mile 9 day transcontinental adventure of a lifetime. Starting from Baton Rouge, LA, zigzagging through the coolest parts of America and finish to a hero’s welcome in Grand Rapids, MI. Run what you brung; Bentleys, Batmobiles, Lamboghinis, Mustangs, Chargers and everything in between.

The Fireball Run is a highly interactive live action transcontinental “game” and America is the game board. It’s Amazing Race meets Cannonball. Teams also race against the clock on some of Americas greatest race tracks. This year the event has an 1980’s theme; missions, music, and more will all center around the big 80’s!

More than the rally itself, the Fireball Run is an exclusive “Rolling Country Club.” Participation in the Fireball Run is by invitation only (see http://www.FireballRun.com for details). The way to get invited is to get referred through a currently registered team. Fireball Run, in essence, is a private club and its members have the authority to invite others. Registered teams participate and network at several exclusive VIP events and parties all over the country leading up to the grand event, the Fireball Run Transcontinental Rally! For consideration, main invitee must be a: Business Owner, Proprietor, Partner, Majority Corporate Stock Holder/ Board Member, C-Class Executive or key corporate decision maker, person of independent wealth, Celebrity, Community leader, or Elected official. Access to the event is limited to 100 teams annually.

Who will WIN? …the power couple? …the mother and daughter team? …two entrepreneurs? …maybe the “Senator”? …or the Celebrities?!! They Think They Know It All, But NOBODY has a clue! Check out the Fireball Run web site for more information.

The People want to know…

Filed under: Cars — Tags: — blasterhappy @ 5:35 am

I have had a few people wanting to know what kind of car I have and I realized that I have never really talked about my car here on the M3 site.

Well I actually own my dream car and it is a 1971 Camaro Z28 Rally Sport.  I grew up with the early second generation Camaros and Firebirds and always wanted one to restore and hotrod.

The car was a “Basket Case” when I got it.  It had no interior, no glass, motor barely ran and was painted by an amateur and had more dirt than paint on the car.  It’s been almost 5 years now and the car has been through a lot with a total engine rebuild, paint and new interior.  There are still some things it needs and will eventually get done but for right now I’m just enjoying it.  The car is really fun to drive.

I rebuilt the small block 350 and spiced it up a bit with .030 over bore with Dart II 210 Cast Race heads, Victor Jr. intake with a 750 cfm Edlebrock performer carb (soon to be replaced with two 500 cfm Competitions), MSD billet distributor, Blaster II coil, the MSD 6A box and Hooker Pro Comp Headers with shorty 18″ Glasspacks right off the headers with the exhaust turned out before the rear wheels with Wicked exhaust tips.  The transmission is a stock THM 350.

The Camaro is painted a 1971 factory color called Nevada Silver with Black Rally Stripes.  The look is complete with Classic Cragar SS wheels with Cooper Cobra rubber all around.  The car definitely turns heads everywhere it goes.

September 24, 1908

The first factory-built Ford Model T was completed on this day, just one more step in Ford’s affordable revolution. Affectionately known as the “Tin Lizzie,” the Model T revolutionized the automotive industry by providing an affordable, reliable car for the average person. Ford was able to keep the price down by retaining control of all raw materials, and by employing revolutionary mass production methods. When it was first introduced, the “Tin Lizzie” cost only $850 and seated two people.

Weekend Recap…

Well I have to say it was a great weekend all the way around.  I managed to get some “Honey-do” projects done like changing all of the locks out on the house.  I went to a keyless entry deadbolt type lock on the main entrance and with new door knob and deadbolt on the back door.  It is so great not having to fumble with keys to get into the house.  The new locks were a bit pricy but well worth it and went in easily in replacement of the old door knobs and locks.

How about those LSU Tigers!  They beat Auburn on their own turf in a 26-21 victory that was the first since 1998.  I was really impressed with the new Rookie Quarterback Jarrett Lee.  He started out a bit shaky during the first half but came out gunning in the second.  The freshman came through and showed everyone he could handle the pressure.  LSU will host Mississippi State at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge this Saturday.

Vidalia Vikings High School football brought home a victory over arch rival Ferriday Trojans under the Friday Night Lights in Ferriday, LA.  The 24-20 victory was the first in 3 years for the Vidalia vs. Ferriday rivalry.

In NASCAR action, my man Kevin Harvick #29 in the Shell/Pennzoil Chevrolet racked up his 8th consecutive Top 10 finish after finishing 6th at Dover International Speedway.  The finish has propelled him to 5th in the Point Standings only 101 points behind the leader, Carl Edwards.  Some are looking at Harvick to be the “Dark Horse” in the Chase for the Cup.  The Sprint Cup series will visit Kansas this weekend.
